what is street elbow?

What is Street Elbow
For scenarios where pipeline flow direction needs to be changed but installation space is limited, engineers often adopt a special type of elbow — street elbow. It features one end with male thread and the other end with female thread, which can be directly screwed into internally threaded equipment or pipelines without additional nipple fittings.
Compared with standard elbows threaded female at both ends, this street elbow fitting cuts connection points by 50% and greatly reduces the risk of leakage. In accordance with ASME B16.11 standard, forged threaded elbows cover a size range from 1/8 inch to 4 inches, with pressure classes including Class 2000 and Class 3000.
The most common bend angle is 90°, namely street elbow 90°, applied for vertical cross piping layout; street elbow 45° delivers a gentle turning angle with a local resistance coefficient of approximately 0.3 (referencing Crane TP-410 data). It effectively reduces pump energy consumption compared with 90° elbows, which have a resistance coefficient of around 1.0.
In terms of material selection, stainless steel is widely used for highly corrosive media or sanitary-grade application requirements.
We supply street elbow stainless steel forged in compliance with ASTM A182 F316L standard. It supports a maximum working pressure of 1500 psi with NPT thread, and operates within a temperature range of -196℃ to 650℃. Solution treatment is applied to guarantee hardness HB≤217. The surface roughness can be controlled at Ra 0.6μm to prevent bacterial adhesion.
In engineering selection comparison of street elbow vs elbow, thread specification matching should be noted besides space and connection point differences. NPT threads achieve sealing by deformation, with recommended assembly torque of 35~45N·m for 1/2 inch size. Standard elbows connected by close nipples introduce one extra potential leakage surface and cumulative thread tolerance risks.
Therefore, street elbow is the preferred option for compact layout in hydraulic systems, steam pipelines, natural gas branch lines and other applications.
With compact structure and diversified material options including stainless steel, carbon steel and duplex steel, street elbow helps shorten installation time and improve long-term operational reliability for projects.
All fittings from AIFN undergo spectral material verification and hydrostatic testing, fully complying with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
