Description

In modern industrial and plumbing piping systems, space constraints are often a major challenge for design engineers.

Manufactured via investment casting or hot forging processes, the Stainless Steel Street Elbow features an integrated structure with male thread on one end and female thread on the other. It enables direct 90° pipe deflection without additional pipe fittings, effectively reducing connection points and leakage risks. The following details are based on the globally adopted NPT tapered pipe thread standard.

Material & Process Characteristics

Base materials adopt ASTM A351 standard CF8M (equivalent to 316 stainless steel) or CF8 (304 stainless steel). The molybdenum-containing 316 grade delivers superior pitting resistance in chloride-rich environments such as seawater and chemical media.

All products undergo solution heat treatment (1050℃ water quenching) to eliminate intergranular carbides, maintaining stable mechanical performance under working temperatures ranging from -196℃ to 650℃.

Threads are machined in accordance with ANSI B1.20.1 standard, with a 60° thread angle and 1:16 taper. When combined with PTFE tape or thread sealant, the fitting can withstand hydrostatic pressure up to 1500psi (approx. 10.3MPa).

Stainless Steel Street Elbow Specifications

Model Code Thread Size Structure Center to Face Dimension Pressure Rating Recommended Torque
SSE-0309 3/8″ NPT 90 degree street elbow Male × Female Thread 27.5 mm 3000 psi 40 N·m
SSE-0312 3/8″ NPT x 1/2″ NPT street elbow 3/8″ Male × 1/2″ Female 30.2 mm (outlet end) 2500 psi 45 N·m
SSE-1209 1/2″ NPT 90° street elbow Male × Female Thread 34.0 mm 2500 psi 55 N·m
Note: The compact 3/8″ street 90° model is widely used for pressure gauge and instrument sampling pipelines. The reducing type 3/8″ NPT x 1/2″ NPT street elbow allows size transition without extra adapters, saving approximately 40% installation space.

Typical Application Scenarios

  • Chemical Plant Corrosive Fluid Transportation: 316 grade street elbows for branch line deflection of sulfuric acid and organic solvents, achieving emission-free sealing with PTFE gaskets.
  • High-Pressure Hydraulic Systems: Connection for pump and valve inlet & outlet in construction machinery. The integrated male and female thread design eliminates the need for double male connectors and sockets, minimizing potential leakage points.
  • Food & Pharmaceutical Sanitary Piping: Electropolished surface treatment (Ra ≤ 0.6μm) is available for hygienic street elbows with clamp connection, fully compliant with CIP/SIP cleaning requirements.
  • Marine & Seawater Cooling Loops: Custom duplex stainless steel or Monel alloy street elbows are available to resist marine biological corrosion and saltwater erosion.

FAQ

Q1: What are the advantages of a stainless steel street elbow compared with a standard 90° elbow plus separate male and female adapters?

A: The one-piece integrated design removes two extra threaded connection joints required in combined assembly (standard elbow + male nipple + female coupling). This greatly cuts leakage paths. In addition, the male thread end of the street elbow can be directly screwed into equipment or valve female ports, requiring no extra wrench clearance for installation in narrow cabinets and instrument boxes. Verified by ASME B16.11, the fatigue life of integrated street elbows is around 3 times longer than assembled combinations.

Q2: How to properly select and install the reducing 3/8″ NPT x 1/2″ NPT street elbow?

A: This reducing elbow is ideal for applications where the main pipeline is 1/2″ and branch instruments or small actuators feature 3/8″ female thread ports.

For tapered NPT threads, follow the installation rule: tighten by hand first, then turn 2 to 3 additional rounds with a wrench. Over-tightening will cause female thread expansion and cracking. For steam and high-temperature oil service, use graphite thread lubricant and strictly follow the specified torque values.
