How do you install a pipe elbow?

In ship construction, piping systems undertake the transportation of critical media such as fuel oil, cooling water, and ballast water. The installation quality of pipe elbows directly affects the overall ship safety and service life cycle.
Taking weldable pipe elbows as an example, the installation process must strictly comply with AWS D1.1/D1.5 or classification society specifications (e.g., ABS, DNV). Taking the typical 90 degree pipe elbow as the research object, this article elaborates on the installation procedures and solutions to common problems in detail.
Standard Installation Procedures
  1. Material Inspection

    Verify that the elbow material is compatible with the pipeline material (e.g., 316L stainless steel or copper-nickel alloy), and the wall thickness tolerance meets ASTM A403 or MIL standards. For instance, the standard wall thickness of a 2″ pipe elbow is Sch40 (3.91mm) or Sch80 (5.16mm).

  2. Cutting and Grooving

    Use an orbital cutting machine to ensure the end face verticality is no more than 0.5mm. The groove angle ranges from 30° to 37.5°, with a root face of 1~2mm reserved to form a Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) joint.

  3. Fitting and Tack Welding

    Apply fixtures for forced alignment, with misalignment controlled within 1.5mm. Conduct three-point tack welding, with each weld length of 10~15mm and an interval of 120°.

  4. Welding Parameters

    Adopt TIG welding for root pass (current: 90~120A, argon flow rate: 10~15L/min) and MAG welding for filler and capping pass (current: 140~180A, voltage: 22~26V). The interpass temperature shall be kept below 150°C.

  5. Non-Destructive Testing

    Implement 100% Radiographic Testing (RT) in accordance with ISO 17635 with Class II qualification acceptance, or adopt Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) for inspection.

Problem 1: How to precisely align 90 degree metal pipe elbow in narrow cabin sections and avoid stress concentration?

Solution: Adopt laser aligners or 3D scanning to prefabricate short pipes. In limited space scenarios, short radius type (SR, R=1.0D) of 90 degree metal pipe elbow can replace the standard long radius type (LR, R=1.5D).

It should be noted that the pressure drop of SR elbows will increase by approximately 15%~20%, so pump head needs to be rechecked and verified. Conduct cold spring compensation before installation, and reserve thermal displacement allowance of 0.5~1mm per millimeter.
Problem 2: Welding deformation causes the elbow angle deviation to exceed the allowable limit (>±0.5°), raising the risk of medium leakage.

Solution: Implement symmetrical welding sequence (inside-first-outside-last, skip welding method), and install temporary stiffeners on the back of elbows. Control the heat input no more than 25 kJ/cm, and conduct slow cooling after welding until the temperature drops to 100°C, followed by natural air cooling.

For weldable pipe elbows, designs with backing rings are recommended to ensure forced alignment. In case of existing deformation, cold correction shall be performed by hydraulic straightening machines (deformation less than 1.5%D), or the deformed section shall be cut off for re-welding.
