Description

180 Degree Steel Pipe Elbow for Heat Exchangers & U-Bends
The 180 degree steel pipe elbow (also known as U-type elbow) is designed to reverse fluid flow direction by 180°. It is widely applied in heat exchanger tube bundles, boiler circuits and turnaround pipelines in compact spaces.
Material & Specification Diversity
AIFN offers 180° elbows in a full range of material grades:
  • Carbon Steel: ASTM A234 WPB (for high-temperature and high-pressure steam, oil & gas service)
  • Stainless Steel: ASTM A403 WP304/316L (corrosion-resistant, suitable for chemical and food-grade media)

Specially, stainless steel 180 degree elbows deliver outstanding performance in acidic or chloride-containing environments. The smooth inner wall greatly reduces the risk of medium retention.

  • Alloy Steel: ASTM A234 WP11/WP22 (for high-temperature creep working conditions)

Size Range: 1/2″ – 48″ (DN15 – DN1200)

Wall Thickness Schedule: Sch10, Sch20, Sch40, Sch80, Sch160, XXS

Bending Radius: Standard 1.5D (long radius); customized 2D and 3D are available to meet special flow resistance requirements.

Connection Type & Pressure Class
  • Connection Method: Butt Weld (BW) as the primary option; Socket Weld (SW) and Threaded (NPT/BSPT) types are available for small sizes (≤2″).
  • Pressure Class: Compliant with ASME B16.9/B16.11 standards, with a maximum rating up to Class 2500 (approx. 42MPa).
For high-strength pipeline systems, the 180 degree stainless steel pipe elbow maintains stable mechanical properties under high-temperature oxidation conditions, commonly used for furnace tube turnaround sections in refinery heating furnaces.

Manufacturing Process Seamless (≤24″) / Plate Fabricated Welded (≥26″)
End Type Plain End, Bevel End (Butt Weld), Threaded, Socket Weld
Structural Features & Technical Advantages
  • Integral Forming: Large-diameter 180° elbows adopt hot pushing technology, ensuring uniform wall thickness without thinning areas.
  • Intergranular Corrosion Resistance: All stainless steel products pass ASTM A262 Practice E inspection to guarantee premium corrosion resistance.
  • Full Dimensional Inspection: 100% traceable Radiographic Testing (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is supported.
Taking the typical specification 3″ 180 degree elbow (Sch40, 1.5R, A234 WPB) as an example, its center-to-center distance is about 114.3mm with an approximate weight of 8.2kg, which is a standard turnaround component for the lower header of boiler water wall.
Application Scenarios
  • Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers: Turnaround sections for U-type tube bundles
  • Boilers & Heating Furnaces: 180° furnace tube turnaround to improve heat exchange efficiency
  • Petrochemical Plants: Layer transition turning for space-limited pipe racks
  • Marine Ballast Systems: 316L 180° elbows with excellent seawater corrosion resistance
Purchaser FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between a 180-degree elbow and two 90-degree elbows?

A: A single 180-degree elbow combines two weld joints into one, reduces pressure drop by 30-40% compared with two 90° elbows connected with straight pipe, and saves axial installation space. It requires a relatively larger bending radius (generally 1.5D or 2D). It is the optimal solution for compact U-bend design of heat exchangers.

Q2: Can you provide a 3″ 180 degree elbow in stainless steel 316L with a 2D radius?

A: Yes. We custom manufacture 3″ 180 degree elbow in ASTM A403 WP316L, with optional bending radius up to 3D. For 2D radius (R=2×OD), the center-to-center distance is 152.4mm (6 inches). This type is widely used in chloride-rich working environments. PMI test reports and ferrite control certificates for duplex stainless steel grades can be provided on request. The MOQ for standard schedule products starts from 5 pieces.
